London is on the phone in my kitchen. I can hear her arguing loudly with her dad. I know it canât be her mom on the other end because nobody would dare argue with her mom. Mrs. Harrison is very strict. Cool, but strict.
No wonder she and Mama get along.
âBut, Dad!â London moans. Itâs funny how she loses her know-it-all voice when sheâs talking to her parents.
Thereâs more talking from the other end of the line. I try not to listen. My stomach is a jumble of nerves because even though I donât want Sir Teddy going anywhere, it seems like there may not be any other option.
Amir has finally stopped sneezing, but only because Mama took him up to his room. Dada Jee, on the other hand, is still here. Heâs standing in front of his beloved armchair, arms crossed in front of his chest, eyebrows like thunderclouds. Sir Teddy couldnât care less. Heâs lying in the exact same position on the armchair, only now heâs snoring too.
I wish heâd stop snoring. It looks like heâs teasing Dada Jee. Like heâs saying, This is my chair now. My spot to snooze. Not yours.
Dada Jee gets the message loud and clear. âImaan!â he growls. âWhy is this animal still here?â
I look around desperately and spy a bowl on the floor. Of course! Sir Teddyâs food. I grab a spoon from a kitchen drawer and tap it against the metal. âSir Teddy!â I call out. âDinner!â
It works. He opens his eyes, shoots off the armchair, and gallops toward me. The next second, heâs got his head in the bowl, chomping away like heâs starved.
Which he probably is, since we walked so much today.
I give his head a little pat. Itâs not his fault I donât know how to run a pet-sitting business.
Dada Jee groans in relief. Then he circles his armchair, staring at it like he doesnât know what to do next. âHow do I clean this thing?â he mutters. âAll the dog hairs. All the fleas.â
I gasp. âSir Teddy doesnât have fleas!â
Dada Jee turns his grumpy eyes to me. âHow do you know? Youâre not a vet.â
âHeâs not scratching at all!â I say. âIâm sure Mrs. Jarrett keeps him very clean.â
âHmph!â
âUgh, I canât believe my dad!â London interrupts us, putting the phone down. âI guess I better go find my mom.â Before I can stop her, sheâs pulling Sir Teddy away from his dog bowl. Away from me.
âLondon, stop!â I shout. âHeâs eating!â
Sir Teddy barks, but he follows London anyway. I notice that his bowl is almost empty.
Traitor. Did he already forget who just gave him dinner?
âLet me just take him to my mom,â London says as she stomps out of the kitchen. âSheâll be fine with it, Iâm telling you. She loves animals. Thereâs no way sheâs going to turn Sir Teddy away.â
I start to panic. Everything London is saying is true. Her mom may be strict, but she loves animals more than anybody else Iâve ever seen. One time, we found an injured bird on the street, and she held it in her arms like it was a tiny baby.
